What Is Your Colorado Junk Car Worth?

Colorado junk cars typically sell for $150 to $800. Larger trucks and SUVs bring $400 to $1,200 or more. Weight affects scrap metal returns, and condition affects parts salvageability. Running vehicles and those with working catalytic converters get higher prices. Colorado’s dry climate means less rust than Midwest states, which often keeps vehicle components in better shape. Front Range cities have strong demand for domestic truck parts, while mountain towns need four-wheel-drive components. Newer models with intact engines and transmissions get top offers.

Current scrap steel prices set the baseline value for any junk vehicle. When steel trades higher, even non-running cars with minimal salvageable parts become more valuable. The price tracker below shows today’s rates at Colorado recycling facilities. These prices move based on domestic demand, export markets, and seasonal construction activity. Your vehicle’s curb weight times the per-ton scrap rate gives you the minimum value. Additional worth comes from usable parts, precious metals in catalytic converters, and aluminum components.

Colorado Junk Car Laws and Title Requirements

Title Transfer Process in Colorado

The Colorado Division of Motor Vehicles requires sellers to complete the assignment section on the back of the vehicle title. Print the buyer’s name, sale price, date, and your signature. Colorado titles include an odometer disclosure section that must be completed for vehicles less than 20 years old. Both parties should keep copies of the completed title. Sellers should also submit a Vehicle Title and Registration Application (Form DR 2395) within 60 days to remove liability and notify the state of the sale.

Selling a Junk Car Without a Title

Colorado allows junk vehicle sales without a title in certain cases. Licensed salvage dealers can buy vehicles using a Bill of Sale and ownership verification through VIN inspection. For vehicles over 20 years old, some flexibility exists, but most buyers still want proof of ownership. If you lost your title, get a duplicate before selling. Vehicles with liens cannot be sold without a lien release letter from the financial institution listed on the title record.

Getting a Duplicate Title in Colorado

Request a duplicate Colorado title by completing Form DR 2489 (Application for Duplicate Title) at any county motor vehicle office or online at the Colorado DMV website. The fee is $8.05. Bring valid ID, and all title holders must sign the application. Processing takes about 4-6 weeks by mail. For faster service, visit a county office in person. Some locations offer same-day duplicate titles for an additional fee.

Abandoned Vehicle Laws

Under Colorado Revised Statutes 42-4-2103, a vehicle is considered abandoned if left on public property for 48 hours or on private property without the owner’s consent for 24 hours. Law enforcement must tag abandoned vehicles before towing, and owners have 48 hours to remove them after tagging. Denver, Colorado Springs, and Aurora enforce strict abandoned vehicle ordinances with fines from $50 to $500. Property owners can petition to have abandoned vehicles removed through local law enforcement after documenting the abandonment period.

Colorado-Specific Requirements

Colorado requires emissions testing in the Denver metro area, but junk vehicles sold for salvage are exempt. Remove license plates before the vehicle is towed. You can surrender them to any county motor vehicle office or transfer them to another vehicle. Colorado law requires sellers to provide a damage disclosure statement if the vehicle has been in a major accident. Sellers must also disclose if the vehicle has a salvage, rebuilt, or flood title brand.
