What Is Your Oklahoma Junk Car Worth?

Junk cars in Oklahoma typically sell for $150 to $800, with some vehicles bringing $1,000 or more. Weight matters most since scrap metal sells by the ton. A full-size truck or SUV will generally fetch more than a compact sedan. Cars with catalytic converters, engines, and transmissions still intact bring higher prices. Popular models like Ford F-150s, Chevy Silverados, and Honda Accords often get premium offers because of parts demand. Oklahoma’s milder climate means less rust damage than northern states, which helps preserve vehicle value.

Scrap steel prices set the baseline value for any junk car. When steel prices climb, your vehicle is worth more even if it doesn’t run. The scrap market shifts based on domestic demand, international trade, and manufacturing activity. Oklahoma’s location near steel mills in Texas and Arkansas helps keep local scrap rates competitive. Service Oklahoma Issues the Title, a Licensed Operator Takes the Paperwork

The Oklahoma Tax Commission stopped handling motor vehicle work on January 1, 2023, when the Motor Vehicle Services Division moved to Service Oklahoma. The counter you stand at is almost never a state office but a licensed operator, the private business Oklahoma called a tag agent until the changeover, and 47 O.S. § 1105 lets you file at either. Since July 1, 2025 titles are issued electronically by default, with paper issued in limited cases and on request where there is no lien, and a paper title you already hold stays valid until the next transaction converts it. On an electronic record, Form 718, Bill of Sale of an Electronic Title, replaces the certificate and is notarized the same way.

The Assignment on the Back Has to Be Sworn, Not Just Signed

47 O.S. § 1107 requires the title holder to endorse a complete assignment with warranty of title and a statement of all liens, sworn before a notary public or another person authorized by law to take acknowledgments, and to deliver it with the car. The one carve-out is a transfer to an insurer settling a total loss. Your buyer then has thirty days to present the assigned certificate and insurance verification with an $11 fee. Registration is a separate, longer clock of two months, after which 47 O.S. § 1132 charges a dollar a day up to $100.

Replacing a Lost Title, and What to Do If One Was Never in Your Name

A replacement runs on Form 701-7, revised 7/2025: $11.00 at a licensed operator, $12.73 if you mail it, sworn before a notary. 47 O.S. § 1108 fixes that $11 figure. Oklahoma is a title-holding state, so an active lien means the lienholder has the title and the release has to clear first. A paper title, once issued, is mailed rather than handed across a counter. If the car was never titled to you, Oklahoma offers no surety-bond route; you use Form 753, Affidavit of Vehicle Ownership, revised 07/2026, with a letter of no record and a notarized proof of purchase.

The Title-Free Route Is Form 766, and It Has a Model-Year Test

Subsection R of 47 O.S. § 1105 is the provision junk sellers need. A vehicle outside the last ten model years, not roadworthy and not repairable, or any vehicle going to a scrap metal dealer, transfers on a Certificate of Ownership, Form 766, when the title is lost, canceled or unavailable. It is signed in triplicate, and the seller files one copy within thirty days with $4. Subsection Q is the other half: surrender the title on a car worth nothing beyond parts and it is canceled free once any lien clears. 2 O.S. § 11-92 lets a scrap dealer take a title, a notarized power of attorney, or a statement of ownership with a bill of sale.

Plates Stay With You, and Most Junk Cars Skip the Odometer Line

47 O.S. § 1112.2 keeps the plate with the person, not the car: pull it before the tow truck leaves. Within two business days, either side has to pre-register the transfer. The odometer box trips people up, because 47 O.S. § 1107.2 excuses disclosure on any vehicle built in or before the 2010 model year, on anything rated over 16,000 pounds, and on 2011-and-newer vehicles after twenty years.

How Long a Dead Car Can Sit in Oklahoma

47 O.S. § 901 makes abandoning a vehicle on a highway unlawful and lets an officer remove one after 48 hours. On private ground, 47 O.S. § 954A lets the property owner call a licensed Class AA wrecker once the vehicle has sat 48 hours, or straight away if it was left without permission. Cities layer rules on top: open storage in Tulsa is capped at forty-eight hours, while Norman runs a ten-day clock from the posted notice.

Cities We Buy Junk Cars in Oklahoma

Oklahoma splits into two pickup problems, and they do not look alike. Green Country in the northeast runs on I-44 and US-75 through Tulsa County, where our Tulsa crews work the river neighborhoods and the suburbs past the county line. Down I-35, Cleveland County is the other anchor, and the Norman page covers the OU side of the metro. We also buy in Oklahoma City, Edmond and Midwest City across Oklahoma County, in Moore south of the river, in Broken Arrow on the Tulsa and Wagoner county line, and in Lawton out in Comanche County near the Wichita Mountains, though none of those have their own page yet.

Past the metros the state gets thin fast. The Panhandle counties of Cimarron, Texas and Beaver, the Ouachita country southeast of McAlester, and the ranch sections along the Red River all mean a longer haul to a processor, which is why we quote the tow before we quote the car. One piece of Oklahoma paperwork helps everywhere: Service Oklahoma reports licensed operators in all 77 counties at more than 270 locations, so the office that takes your Form 766 or your replacement title is usually in your own county seat rather than Oklahoma City.

Frequently Asked Questions — Selling a Junk Car in Oklahoma

Oklahoma made my title electronic. What do I hand the tow driver?

You hand over a notarized Form 718, Bill of Sale of an Electronic Title. Oklahoma made electronic titles the default on July 1, 2025, with paper issued only in limited cases, though a paper title you already hold stays valid until the next transaction converts it. Service Oklahoma treats Form 718 as the substitute for the certificate on an electronic record. Get it notarized before pickup, not after.

Can I sell a junk car in Oklahoma with no title at all?

Sometimes, on Form 766, the Certificate of Ownership. Subsection R of 47 O.S. 1105 allows it for a vehicle outside the last ten model years that is not roadworthy and not repairable, or for any vehicle sold to a scrap metal dealer, when the title is lost or canceled. The form is signed in triplicate, and you as the seller file one copy within thirty days with a $4 fee.

What does a replacement Oklahoma title cost, and how fast is it?

Eleven dollars at a licensed operator, or $12.73 if you mail the application, using Form 701-7 as revised in July 2025. A notary has to witness the record owner signing it, and that owner needs a live Oklahoma registration unless they have since moved out of state. Service Oklahoma mails every title and will not release one over a counter, so start this before you book the tow.

Do I leave the tag on the car when it goes?

No. Under 47 O.S. 1112.2 the plate belongs to you, not the vehicle, so pull it and keep it for your next car. Either you or the buyer then has two business days to pre-register the transfer with a licensed operator. If the buyer drives off with the plate gone, 1112.2(A)(5) allows five calendar days on a dated, notarized bill of sale carried in the vehicle, and from November 1, 2026 that window covers private sales only, which is what a junk-car sale is.

My car is a 2003. Do I still have to fill in an odometer reading?

No. 47 O.S. 1107.2 excuses the seller of any vehicle built in or before the 2010 model year from the odometer disclosure, and also any vehicle rated over 16,000 pounds. Vehicles from the 2011 model year forward stay in the system for twenty years. Most of the cars we buy in Oklahoma fall on the exempt side, but write the mileage down anyway if the odometer still reads.

How soon can a dead car get towed off a property in Oklahoma?

Not long. 47 O.S. 954A lets a property owner have a vehicle towed by a Class AA wrecker after 48 hours, or immediately if it was left without permission. Tulsa caps open storage of an inoperable vehicle at forty-eight hours and can fine up to $1,200, while Norman gives you ten days from its posted notice. Phone 1-800-935-8652 the day a notice goes up, because neither clock leaves room to also chase a replacement title.
