What Is Your Colorado Junk Car Worth?
Colorado junk cars typically sell for $150 to $800. Larger trucks and SUVs bring $400 to $1,200 or more. Weight affects scrap metal returns, and condition affects parts salvageability. Running vehicles and those with working catalytic converters get higher prices. Colorado’s dry climate means less rust than Midwest states, which often keeps vehicle components in better shape. Front Range cities have strong demand for domestic truck parts, while mountain towns need four-wheel-drive components. Newer models with intact engines and transmissions get top offers.
Current scrap steel prices set the baseline value for any junk vehicle. When steel trades higher, even non-running cars with minimal salvageable parts become more valuable. The price tracker below shows today’s rates at Colorado recycling facilities. These prices move based on domestic demand, export markets, and seasonal construction activity. Your vehicle’s curb weight times the per-ton scrap rate gives you the minimum value. Additional worth comes from usable parts, precious metals in catalytic converters, and aluminum components.
Colorado Junk Car Laws and Title Requirements
Last reviewed 2026-10-05 against Colorado state sources. Fees and forms change; the official links below are authoritative.
| Who issues titles | Colorado DMV titles are issued through county motor vehicle offices; most title work must be done in person. source |
|---|---|
| Duplicate title form and fee | Form DR 2539A, Duplicate Title/Lien Request and Receipt, $8.20 under C.R.S. 42-6-137(5). source |
| Can you sell without a title? | Yes, if you are the title owner, a tow operator or dealer, or provide a department bill of sale; otherwise a seven-day hold. source |
| Notary required? | No. The seller certifies the transfer under penalty of perjury; DR 2539A needs a witness signature, not a notary. source |
| Odometer disclosure required | Yes on model-year 2011 and newer vehicles for 20 years; exempt if 20+ years old, over 16,000 lbs GVWR, or a trailer. source |
| Who keeps the license plates | The seller. Plates follow the registered owner, not the vehicle; return them to a county office or recycle them. source |
| Deadline to report the sale | Seller may file a Report of Release of Liability within 5 days via myDMV; the buyer has 60 days to title. source |
| Abandoned / inoperable vehicle statute | 48 hours unattended on public property (C.R.S. 42-4-1802) or 24 hours on private property without consent (42-4-2102). source |
| Salvage or junk title trigger | Insurer total loss, or repair cost above pre-damage retail value; hail damage and theft are expressly excluded. source |
| Catalytic converter sale limits | Buyer must take a sworn ownership affidavit, log your ID and plate, and may pay cash only up to $300. source |
Who Issues a Colorado Title
The Department of Revenue’s Division of Motor Vehicles owns the Colorado title record, but the counter work falls to an authorized agent: the county clerk and recorder in each county, Broomfield’s clerk and recorder, and Denver’s Manager of Revenue. A new title costs $7.20 under C.R.S. 42-6-137. Sign and print your name on the back exactly as it appears on the front, add the price and date, and certify under penalty of perjury. No notary. The buyer then has 60 days to title the car before $25-a-month late fees start, capped at $100. Aurora splits across three county offices; our Aurora page maps.
Selling Without a Title
Under C.R.S. 42-4-2202, a recycler that is not a licensed dealer may take your car if you are the owner on the title, a licensed tow operator or a dealer, or if you supply a bill of sale on a Department of Revenue form. Only when none of those fits must the yard hold the vehicle seven business days and submit the VIN to the Colorado motor vehicle verification system. A car 25 years or older with no paperwork left skips the surety bond on the DR 2462 checklist. Active liens still need a release letter.
Duplicate Titles: Form DR 2539A, $8.20
Order the duplicate on form DR 2539A, the Duplicate Title/Lien Request and Receipt; DR 2489A is a record search and will not produce a title. Only the owner, lienholder or an agent with power of attorney may apply, and it takes a witness signature rather than a notary seal. File at a county office, through myDMV, or by mail; an out-of-state address means mail only.
Salvage, Nonrepairable and “Junk” Brands
C.R.S. 42-6-102(17) makes a car a salvage vehicle when an insurer calls it a total loss, or when repairs would cost more than its pre-damage retail fair market value. The definition excludes hail damage and theft outright, which decides a lot of Front Range cars. A salvage buyer has 60 days to apply on form DR 2410; a nonrepairable title covers vehicles designated as parts or scrap. Brands go on DR 2710. Once a vehicle is stamped junk, parts only or for crusher, the state cancels the VIN permanently.
Plates, Liability and Emissions
Plates belong to the registered owner, not the car, so pull them before the tow truck leaves. Standard plates go back to a county office or into recycling; only personalized plates move to your next vehicle. Within five days you can file a Report of Release of Liability through myDMV. In the emissions program area, the Denver metro and North Front Range, C.R.S. 42-4-310(1)(a)(I) normally makes the seller supply a valid emissions certification. Subsection (4) exempts an inoperable or untestable car, and one sold as an abandoned vehicle under part 18 or 21, if you first give the buyer written notice on form DR 2023, Notice of Emissions Non-Compliance. The buyer still needs a certification to register it.
Abandoned and Inoperable Vehicles
A car is abandoned after 48 hours unattended on public property under C.R.S. 42-4-1802, or sooner where a city ordinance says so; on private property the line is 24 hours without the owner’s or lessee’s consent. The owner, lessee or a written-authorized agent hires a PUC-licensed operator to tow it; a car left at a recycler’s yard can be recycled outright if appraised under $350. After a tow off public property the agency has ten working days to report it to the state under C.R.S. 42-4-1804; the department returns a title search within ten working days; the agency then has ten more to notify owner and lienholder, certified mail if it stores the car, first-class if a tow operator does. Thirty calendar days after that postmark the car can be sold. Colorado Springs runs tighter on-street limits, covered on our Colorado Springs page.

Cities We Buy Junk Cars in Colorado
Colorado breaks into four selling markets. The Front Range Urban Corridor runs up I-25 from Pueblo through Colorado Springs and the Denver metro to Fort Collins, and it holds most of the state’s shredders, core buyers and dismantlers. East of it the plains counties strung along I-70 and US 385 put long empty miles between pickups. West of the Continental Divide, the Western Slope works out of the Grand Valley around Grand Junction, with the Gunnison and Uncompahgre country and the Four Corners further south. The San Luis Valley sits on the Divide’s other side, in south-central Colorado between the San Juans and the Sangre de Cristos. We run dedicated pages for Aurora and Colorado Springs, and we buy the same way in Denver, Lakewood, Thornton, Boulder, Fort Collins and Pueblo, plus the rest of the 64 counties.
Weather sets the schedule on anything west of Golden. CDOT can put traction and chain laws in effect on any state highway once a storm moves in, and ignoring one costs a $100 fine plus a $33 surcharge, or $500 plus a $157 surcharge if the resulting mess closes a lane. A flatbed carrying a dead car over Vail Pass or through the Eisenhower-Johnson tunnels is held to that standard too, so we book mountain pickups against the forecast. On the Eastern Plains and the Western Slope we batch runs instead, which is why a Craig or Burlington pickup can land a day behind a Thornton one.

Frequently Asked Questions — Selling a Junk Car in Colorado
What does a duplicate Colorado title cost, and which form do I use?
It costs $8.20, and the form is DR 2539A, the Duplicate Title/Lien Request and Receipt. Do not confuse it with DR 2489A, a record search. Only the owner, a lienholder or an agent with power of attorney can apply, and the form needs a witness signature confirming you presented identification. File it at a county motor vehicle office, through myDMV, in person at the state Vehicle Services counter in Lakewood, or by mail to the Department of Revenue, Vehicle Services Section, PO Box 173350 Rm 150, Denver, CO 80217-3350.
Can I sell a junk car in Colorado if the title is gone?
Often yes. C.R.S. 42-4-2202 gives a recycler three separate ways in: you are the owner on the title, you are a PUC-licensed tow operator or licensed dealer, or you hand over a bill of sale on a Department of Revenue form. Only when none of those fits must the yard hold the car seven business days and run the VIN first. A vehicle over 25 years old needs no surety bond.
Does hail damage make my Colorado car a salvage vehicle?
No. The salvage definition in C.R.S. 42-6-102(17) specifically excludes hail damage and theft, so a car hammered in a Front Range storm keeps a clean title no matter how bad the roof and hood look. That matters when you sell: a hail car is quoted as a regular used vehicle with body damage, not as a branded salvage unit, and its parts stay worth more.
Do I need an emissions test to sell a car in the Denver metro area?
Usually, but there is a written way out. Inside the program area covering the Denver metro and North Front Range, the seller normally hands the buyer a valid certification of emissions compliance. C.R.S. 42-4-310(4) exempts a vehicle that is inoperable or cannot be tested, and one sold as an abandoned vehicle, if the seller gives written notice before closing on form DR 2023. The buyer still needs a certification to register the car.
What do I do with my Colorado license plates after the car is towed away?
Keep them. Colorado plates are tied to the registered owner rather than the vehicle, so leaving them on a sold car leaves you exposed to its tolls, tickets and worse. Return standard plates to any county motor vehicle office or recycle them as scrap metal; personalized plates can move to your next vehicle. Then file a Report of Release of Liability through myDMV within five days.
How long can a dead car sit before Colorado treats it as abandoned?
Forty-eight hours unattended on public property, or 24 hours on private property without the owner's consent, unless a local ordinance sets a shorter window. Cities such as Colorado Springs and Aurora do set their own street and inoperable-vehicle limits, which are shorter in places. If a notice has already landed on your windshield, call 1-800-935-8652 so a pickup gets booked before the city tows it.
From the Front Range corridor through Denver, Colorado Springs and Fort Collins to the Western Slope around Grand Junction, our drivers work both sides of the Rockies year-round. Mountain-town pickups off I-70 are scheduled around weather, not around a tow lot’s hours.
