What Is Your New Hampshire Junk Car Worth?

Junk car prices in New Hampshire typically run $150 to $650 for most sedans and compact vehicles, while trucks and SUVs often bring $300 to $900 or more. New Hampshire’s harsh winters and heavy road salt mean rust and corrosion hit vehicle values hard here. Cars with minimal frame rust, working catalytic converters, and desirable parts bring higher prices. Popular models like Honda Civics, Toyota Camrys, and Ford F-150s hold better value because parts stay in demand.

Scrap steel prices set the baseline value for any junk vehicle. A typical car weighs 2,500 to 3,500 pounds, so even as pure scrap, your vehicle has real metal value. Current Northeast scrap rates move with global steel markets, recycling demand, and seasonal factors. The live tracker below shows today’s scrap metal prices affecting New Hampshire junk car values. Vehicles with aluminum parts, copper wiring, and intact catalytic converters bring more than base scrap value.

Registration Starts at Your Town Clerk, Not the DMV

New Hampshire splits a vehicle sale between the town and the state, and the town half comes first. RSA 261:148 bars registering a resident’s vehicle until the owner holds a permit from the city or town where he or she lives, and the state side waits on the town fees. RSA 261:153, I prices that permit against the maker’s list price, from 18 mills per dollar on a current model year down to 3 mills on anything five model years old or older, with a $5 floor. Your buyer’s title application starts at the same counter.

The Model Year 2000 Line

RSA 261:3, I(k) exempts from titling any motor vehicle whose manufacturer’s model year is before 2000, other than heavy trucks and truck-tractors over 18,000 pounds gross weight, so the DMV does not title a 1999 or older car as a matter of course. Paragraph III, effective August 18, 2026, still lets an owner request a voluntary title by sending in a current or expired New Hampshire registration, an out-of-state title, a title application or a current VIN verification. Junking it does not require one. An exempt car changes hands on TDMV 22A alongside a TDMV 19A VIN verification, or an old registration or title in copy; only a police officer, licensed dealer, inspection station or agent of the director may fill out the 19A.

A Duplicate Title Is TDMV 18 and $35

Newer than that needs the paper. File TDMV 18, revision 2/26, at a DMV counter or by mail to the Bureau of Title, 23 Hazen Drive, Concord. RSA 261:20, I(c) moved the fee from $25 to $35 on January 1, 2026, and the form prints $35.00 per application. Nothing is notarized. The quiet trap is liens: the form wants a release on TDMV 20A or bank letterhead whenever the original title named a lienholder, even on a loan cleared decades ago. Issuance runs about 30 to 50 calendar days.

Plates Stay With You, and the Clock Runs 20 Days

Under RSA 261:66, I the registration expires the instant ownership transfers, so the plates come off before the car goes on the deck and you keep the expired certificate, which earns transfer credit on your next vehicle. New Hampshire publishes no release-of-liability form; RSA 261:14, IV instead shields an owner who has delivered the vehicle and executed the assignment. The deadline that bites is 20 days, after which RSA 261:20, II adds a penalty equal to the fee. An out-of-state buyer of a title-exempt car may need a certified copy of the registration, $20, Concord office only.

Abandonment Is 24 Hours, and Disposal Can Be 15 Days

RSA 262:40-c sets the line at 24 hours. Leaving a vehicle that long on any way, or on land that is not yours without permission, is a violation carrying $100 to $500 plus penalty assessment, plus the commissioner’s towing and storage costs. In a storage lot, RSA 262:36-a, III is the paragraph to fear: anything worth under $1,000, or fit only for salvage, can go in 15 days on 10 days’ notice. Nashua caps outdoor storage at one unregistered or uninspected vehicle per residential lot. Manchester allows one only on a single-family or two-family lot, a second only at 20,000 square feet or more, and never in the front or street yard. Both still read on “uninspected” though inspections stopped in February 2026.

Salvage Titles and the Converter

Selling to a buyer who will crush the car is not salvage-title territory: RSA 261:22, I puts the NMVTIS report on the crushing facility, and paragraph II aims the 20-day salvage certificate at insurers. Converters are different. RSA 322:16, VI makes a licensed junk dealer, repair shop or junkyard take proof of identification plus a document showing you own it; paragraph XI exempts whole vehicles.

Cities We Buy Junk Cars in New Hampshire

New Hampshire is made up of 10 counties and we tow in all of them. Manchester and Nashua are both Hillsborough County, strung together with Concord on the Everett Turnpike and I-93 through the Merrimack Valley. We also work Derry and Salem at the Massachusetts end of I-93, Dover and Rochester along the Spaulding Turnpike on the Seacoast side, and Keene out in the Monadnock region off Route 9. Past those the runs stretch into the Lakes Region around Winnipesaukee, the Upper Valley along I-89, and Coos County and the North Country above the notches.

One thing shapes a New Hampshire sale more than the odometer does: the paperwork is split in two. Titles themselves are issued out of the Bureau of Title at 23 Hazen Drive in Concord, but you do not have to drive there. The DMV lists duplicate titles as a counter service at 12 of its 14 offices, from Nashua and Salem in the south up to Gorham and Twin Mountain in the North Country; only Colebrook and North Haverhill are driver-licensing appointments only. The registration half of the same sale happens at a town clerk’s window, which in most towns is the shorter trip of the two.

Frequently Asked Questions — Selling a Junk Car in New Hampshire

Can I junk a 1999 car in New Hampshire with no title?

Yes. RSA 261:3, I(k) exempts every motor vehicle with a manufacturer's model year before 2000, so the DMV does not title those cars as a matter of course. Paragraph III, in force since August 18, 2026, lets an owner request a voluntary title anyway, but junking the car needs none. Hand over form TDMV 22A, the report of sale for a non-titled vehicle, with a photocopy of an old registration or title, or a TDMV 19A verification signed by a police officer, licensed dealer or inspection station.

What does a replacement New Hampshire title cost in 2026?

$35.00 per application. RSA 261:20, I(c) raised the duplicate certificate of title fee from $25 on January 1, 2026, and the current TDMV 18, revision 2/26, prints the new figure. Make the check payable to State of NH – DMV. No notary is involved. If the original title ever named a lienholder, the DMV also wants a release on TDMV 20A, or a signed letter on bank letterhead, no matter how long ago the loan closed.

Do the plates come off before the tow truck leaves?

Yes, and keep them. RSA 261:66, I ends the registration the moment ownership transfers, which means the plates are no longer attached to that car in any legal sense. Hold the expired registration certificate too. It is what the town clerk needs to give you transfer credit when you register the next vehicle, and without it you pay the full state fee again on a car you already covered.

Does my town clerk have anything to do with scrapping a car?

On the way in, yes. New Hampshire runs registration as a two-part transaction, and RSA 261:148 bars the state side until you hold a municipal permit. RSA 261:153 prices that permit from 18 mills per dollar of list price on a current model year down to 3 mills on anything five model years old or older, never below $5. Your buyer files the title application at the same clerk's counter.

New Hampshire stopped doing inspections. Does that change anything for a junk car?

Not for the sale, but it does for the ordinance that may be pushing you. The DMV's guidance of February 13, 2026 says the inspection program is suspended and stations can no longer issue stickers. Manchester and Nashua both still cap outdoor storage at one unregistered or uninspected vehicle per residential lot, and Nashua treats a missing plate or sticker as proof the car qualifies.

How much can leaving a dead car outside actually cost me here?

The state fine alone runs $100 to $500. RSA 262:40-c makes it a violation to leave a vehicle more than 24 hours on a way or on property that is not yours, adds a penalty assessment, and lets the commissioner bill you for towing, processing and storage. Call 1-800-935-8652 and the car is gone before the notice period runs.
