What Is Your Delaware Junk Car Worth?

Most junk cars in Delaware bring $150 to $850, though larger trucks and SUVs can hit $500 to $1,200 or more. Delaware’s coastal air and road salt in northern counties cause rust damage that affects value. Vehicles with working catalytic converters, newer model years, or in-demand parts bring higher offers. Complete cars with clear titles beat partial vehicles every time. Location plays a role too—congested New Castle County pickups factor differently than rural Sussex County runs.

Scrap steel prices set the baseline value for any junk vehicle. When steel markets run strong, even heavily damaged cars have solid floor prices. Aluminum, copper wiring, and catalytic converter metals add value above the steel price. Check the live scrap price tracker below to see current regional rates.

Who Issues a Delaware Title

Delaware titles every vehicle through one agency. The Division of Motor Vehicles, part of DelDOT, runs four facilities — Wilmington, Delaware City, Dover and Georgetown — with no county office in the chain. A title costs $35.00 without a lien or $55.00 with one, at any weight. On a junk car the document fee is fixed: 30 Del. C. § 3002(c)(1) charges a flat $8.00 under a $400 price, evidenced by a notarized bill of sale. The buyer has 30 days to apply, then a $35.00 late fee.

Signing the Title and Reporting the Sale

You assign the vehicle in Section 1 on the back of the title. One word on the front decides who signs: “AND” means every owner, “AND/OR” means one. The DMV says flatly that Delaware titles do not require notary. 21 Del. C. § 2502 then makes you endorse the buyer’s name, address and transfer date on the registration card and send it in immediately. DMV takes the Seller’s Report of Sale, detachable from newer titles, in its place; that form says its flag will not stop police, the DMV or parking authorities from contacting you.

Replacing a Lost Title: MV213, Not MV212

The duplicate form is MV213, headed Application for Duplicate Title or Sold Out of State to Retain Tag, footed 12/2021, fee $50.00. MV212 sits beside it on the DMV forms index and is the Application for Title. Every owner named signs it with a driver license number, and a power of attorney signing for them must be notarized. With a lien, the lienholder completes one of the two blocks at the bottom; DMV’s procedure also takes a release on their letterhead. A request within 15 days of the last issue date gets held for review.

Scrapping a Delaware Car With No Title

21 Del. C. § 4402(g) is the owner’s route and it is narrow. An owner whose certificate of title is lost or destroyed may hand it to a licensed automotive recycler without one, provided the vehicle is more than 8 years old and has no engine or is otherwise totally inoperable. It also reaches anyone on whose property an abandoned vehicle is found, with no age or condition test. The recycler then mails the last known owner 10 days’ certified notice, or waits 30 days if none is found. Where the car was towed instead, § 4415 lets a wrecker owner pass a vehicle 8 model years or older to a salvage yard with no title, after notice and a State Police Auto Theft Unit inspection. Under § 2512(c) that unit must also clear any untitled car before a scrap processor cuts it.

Plates, Odometer and the Catalytic Converter

Plates are State property under 21 Del. C. § 2125, and § 2128(a) leaves them attached on a transfer, so DMV’s instruction is to pull the plate and return it to any DMV office; the footnote warns a seller who does neither risks red light, toll and parking violations. Moving the number to another car is a $20 application. Odometer disclosure is mandatory on model year 2011 and newer, engine or no engine: DMV reads the § 6408(1)(b) exemption as covering non-motorized vehicles. And if the converter is gone, § 2515 requires written notice signed by the buyer, while 24 Del. C. § 2307(c) limits converter sales to licensed processors and recyclers.

Abandoned and Inoperable Vehicles

The clock in 21 Del. C. § 4401(b) is short. A vehicle that is inoperable, dismantled, wrecked, stripped of major components, or wearing plates at least 30 days expired is abandoned after 12 hours on a public road. On private property with the occupant’s consent, § 4402(d) runs 7 days from a certified-mail notice, then a 24-hour sticker. Wilful abandonment draws a $28.75 to $115 fine under § 4414. Dover’s municipal clock is tighter still; the Dover page carries that ordinance, the Wilmington page the city’s towing track.

Cities We Buy Junk Cars in Delaware

Delaware has three counties, and under them 33 hundreds, a subdivision the State never retired: 11 in New Castle, 9 in Kent and 13 in Sussex, fixed by 9 Del. C. §§ 105-107. Wilmington is the clean case, because the statute defines Wilmington Hundred as nothing more or less than the city limits, and whatever the city annexes joins it. Dover gives its name to two of Kent County’s nine, East Dover and West Dover Hundreds. We also tow out of Newark, Bear and Middletown in northern New Castle County, Smyrna at the head of Kent, Milford where the Mispillion River splits Kent from Sussex, and Seaford, which shares its name with one of the thirteen down there.

What shapes a Delaware pickup is how few state counters there are. The DMV runs four facilities for the whole state, two of them in New Castle County, which leaves Dover for all of Kent and Georgetown for all of Sussex. The Delaware State Police Auto Theft Unit is thinner still, publishing inspection lanes at three sites only, Delaware City, Dover and Georgetown, on fixed days each month. That unit is also the one that has to clear an untitled vehicle before a scrap processor may cut it, under 21 Del. C. § 2512(c). South of the C&D Canal that geography bites hardest, because US 13 and DE 1 do all of the north-south work and there is no third road to fall back on.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Delaware duplicate title form MV212 or MV213?

MV213. The form itself is headed Application for Duplicate Title or Sold Out of State to Retain Tag and footed MV213 12/2021, and its printed procedures say a $50.00 fee must accompany it. MV212 is a separate form on the DMV index, the Application for Title, used to title a vehicle rather than replace a lost certificate. Every owner printed on the title signs MV213 and supplies a driver license number.

My Delaware title is gone. Can the car still be scrapped?

Often yes, through 21 Del. C. 4402(g). That subsection lets an owner whose title is lost or destroyed transfer the vehicle to a licensed automotive recycler without it, as long as the vehicle is more than 8 years old and either has no engine or is otherwise totally inoperable. A running 2014 does not qualify. A 2009 sitting on flats with the motor pulled does. Call 1-800-935-8652 and describe the car honestly, because that test decides the route.

Do I fill in the odometer block on a car with no engine?

Yes, if the car is model year 2011 or newer. A missing engine does not exempt it. The DMV reads the 21 Del. C. 6408(1)(b) exemption for a vehicle that is not self-propelled as covering non-motorized vehicles such as trailers. Model year 2010 and older is encouraged but not mandatory, as is a commercial vehicle over 16,000 pounds gross. A reading lower than the front of the title gets the title rejected unless a discrepancy box is checked.

Does Delaware make me tell the DMV I sold the car?

Yes. 21 Del. C. 2502 requires you to endorse the buyer's name, address and date of transfer on the registration card and send it to the Department immediately, and the DMV accepts the Seller's Report of Sale in its place. The form is printed at the foot of a newer Delaware title and tears off. Mail it to P.O. Box 698, Dover, or email DMV.CorrespondenceServices@delaware.gov. It says on its face that the flag will not stop police, the DMV or parking authorities from contacting you.

Can I cut the catalytic converter off and sell it separately in Delaware?

No. Under 24 Del. C. 2307(c), a used detached converter may only change hands between licensed scrap metal processors, automotive recyclers licensed under 21 Del. C. ch. 75, and their employees. A private owner is not on that list. The same chapter bars paying cash for one, confines the sale to a fixed business address between 6 a.m. and 9 p.m., and makes the buyer hold payment 48 hours with the part tagged and intact.

What do I do with the Delaware tag when the car is towed away?

Take it off and return it to any DMV office. Under 21 Del. C. 2125 plates are State property, and 2128(a) says they stay attached to the vehicle on a transfer, so nothing happens automatically. The DMV's own guidance warns that a seller who neither returns nor retains the plate risks red light, toll and parking violations landing on them afterward. Moving that number onto another car instead is a written application and a $20 fee.

Delaware is compact enough that every pickup in the state is a same-day candidate, from Wilmington and Newark down through Dover to the Sussex County beach towns. I-95, US-13 and DE-1 put a truck within an hour of almost any address, and our drivers run the full length of the state daily. Whether the vehicle sits in a New Castle County driveway or behind a house outside Georgetown, the quote, the tow and the cash work exactly the same way. Sussex, Kent and New Castle counties are all covered without a surcharge.
