Junk Car Pickup Across Milwaukee, WI: Free Towing and Cash at the Curb
If the car behind your Milwaukee house has not moved since the last hard freeze, two clocks are running on you. One belongs to the city. The other is the rust. Tell us the year, make and model on 1-800-935-8652, say whether it still rolls and steers, and a few minutes later you have a price. There is no lot to drive to, no counter, no appointment. We dispatch a truck, towing is free and you are paid at pickup. Milwaukee complicates the pickup more than most cities do, because so much of the housing stock here is alley-loaded. The vehicle is frequently behind the house on a slab that a flatbed cannot reach from the street at all. Tell us on the first call whether the approach is the alley, the driveway apron or the curb, and whether something else is parked in front of it.
Call 1-800-935-8652 for a free offer on your vehicle in Milwaukee. Free towing, cash on pickup.
How to sell a junk car in Milwaukee
Everything starts on the phone. Give the year, make and model, then the condition without softening it: does it start, do all four wheels turn, is the catalytic converter still underneath, has anyone already pulled the battery, the radiator or the wheels. Those answers are the quote. The second half of the call is access, and in Milwaukee that is the half people skip. Riverwest, Harambee, Bay View and Lincoln Village are dense older blocks where the garage opens onto a public alley, and an alley that is wide open in July can be a single rutted lane in February. Walker’s Point and the Historic Third Ward add loading traffic and very short curb windows. Out in Enderis Park, Jackson Park and Washington Heights there is usually a driveway and room to swing a truck around. If the car is sitting in the street, two rules bite at once: s. 101-27-1-a-1 of the traffic code caps standing in one place on a highway at 24 hours, stretched to no more than 48 consecutive hours under s. 101-27-1-a-2 only inside the designated parking program areas that take in part of the east side, Riverwest and a slice of the near south side, and parking between 2 a.m. and 6 a.m. requires a city night parking permit. Find the title before the truck comes, or say on the call that it is gone.
What is a junk car worth in Milwaukee?
Plan on $150 to $700 for a junk vehicle here. Weight sets the floor, so a full-size pickup, a conversion van or a body-on-frame SUV with the engine and transmission still bolted in sits near the top of that band, while a four-cylinder sedan with the converter already cut off sits near the bottom. Any firm figure quoted before someone asks what the vehicle actually is is a guess. Rust is the Milwaukee variable, and it is a real one. WisDOT and the county crews it contracts with spread 332,458 tons of salt on state highways in the 2024-2025 season, 9.6 tons per lane mile, and that is before the city and the county put down their own on local streets. On a Milwaukee car with fifteen winters under it the rockers, the subframe, the brake and fuel lines and the exhaust hangers are usually finished. That reaches your offer directly, because what lifts a car above bare scrap tonnage is resellable used parts, and a part that has to be cut off a corroded subframe is no longer resellable. Working the other way: this is still a metal town with processing capacity close at hand, so a Milwaukee pickup carries no long-haul deduction.
Title and paperwork rules in Wisconsin
The question we field most often in Milwaukee is whether a car can be sold without the title, and in Wisconsin the answer is usually yes. WisDOT states it directly: if you lost your title, you do not need a replacement title to junk the vehicle. The transfer instead runs on form MV2459, the Junked Vehicle Bill of Sale, which is built for moving a vehicle from a registered owner to a licensed salvage dealer. Signing it, you affirm that no liens are outstanding, that you have the legal right to sell, and that the certificate of title was either lost or destroyed or was marked JUNKED and surrendered to the department. Your identity has to be verified by driver license number or photo identification number. A loan is the one hard stop. Under Wis. Stat. 218.23(1r) a licensed salvage dealer may not acquire a vehicle for wrecking if the title shows a secured party, unless the dealer pays that obligation off in full, and 218.23(1g) requires the dealer to examine the department’s title records when you are not holding the paper. If you would rather have the title in hand first, the replacement is form MV2119 and the fee is $20 under Wis. Stat. 342.14(5). No notary is involved.
Milwaukee abandoned and inoperable vehicle rules
Milwaukee handles this under s. 80-49 of the Milwaukee Code of Ordinances, Nuisance Vehicles. A junk motor vehicle is one meeting any three of five conditions: not moved for 30 consecutive days, partially dismantled, inoperable, parked on a surface not approved under s. 252-74-1 and 2, or unlicensed or improperly licensed. Inoperable is spelled out part by part: missing an engine, battery, transmission or wheel, sitting on blocks, or running a flat tire. Partially dismantled covers a missing door, fender or hood and a broken window. Note how s. 80-49-2-f defines public view: storing outside of a fully enclosed code compliant building. A tarp will not help, and neither will a privacy fence. The s. 80-49-6 exception is narrow: a vehicle inside an enclosed building, or on the premises of a lawfully operated repair business or junk yard. Once the commissioner condemns a vehicle, a Condemned placard goes on it and a written hearing petition is due within 72 hours. Not less than 72 hours after the order is served and posted, the city may have the vehicle removed and destroyed and charge the cost against the property. The forfeiture runs $150 to $1,000 per violation, each day counting separately. Complaints go to the Department of Neighborhood Services Nuisance and Environmental Health Section at 414-286-2268; street and alley vehicles go to the DPW Tow Desk at 414-286-8350.
What is the quickest way to junk a car in Milwaukee?
The quickest route in Milwaukee is a phone price and an alley pickup. Give the year, make and model on 1-800-935-8652 and an offer lands in minutes, usually $150 to $700, with nothing deducted for the hook. Why selling beats waiting is specific to this county. Milwaukee is one of seven Wisconsin counties inside the vehicle inspection program, so anyone who buys the car to drive owes an emissions test within 45 days of registering it. A scrapper owes none. Meanwhile the city’s $41 wheel tax and the county’s $30 bill you $71 every renewal.

Frequently asked questions
Can I sell a junk car in Milwaukee without the title?
Usually yes. WisDOT says that if you lost your title you do not need a replacement title to junk the vehicle. The sale moves on form MV2459, the Junked Vehicle Bill of Sale, which transfers a vehicle from a registered owner to a licensed salvage dealer. You affirm on it that no liens are outstanding, that you have the right to sell, and that the title was lost, destroyed, or marked JUNKED and surrendered to the department. Bring a driver license or photo ID, because your identity has to be verified.
How long does Milwaukee give me after a nuisance vehicle order?
Not long. Under s. 80-49 the commissioner serves a written order of condemnation and posts a Condemned placard on the vehicle. A written petition for a hearing has to be filed within 72 hours of condemnation. Not less than 72 hours after the order is mailed or served and posted, if no petition has been filed and the vehicle has not been removed or corrected, the city may have it removed and destroyed, then collect the cost from you or assess it against the premises.
What actually makes a car a junk motor vehicle in Milwaukee?
Section 80-49-2-b uses a three-of-five test. The five conditions are: the vehicle has not been moved for 30 consecutive days, it is partially dismantled, it is inoperable, it is parked on a surface not approved under s. 252-74-1 and 2, or it is unlicensed or improperly licensed. Hit any three and the city can act. Inoperable includes missing an engine, battery, transmission or a single wheel, being up on blocks, or missing a tire or running a flat one.
Will a tarp or a privacy fence keep me out of violation?
No. Section 80-49-2-f defines public view as storing outside of a fully enclosed code compliant building, so the test is a real building with four walls and a roof, not cover and not screening. The exception in s. 80-49-6 is limited to a vehicle in an enclosed building, a vehicle on the premises of a lawfully operated repair business, service station or junk yard, or a vehicle in a city storage place. A garage works. A tarp in the side yard does not.
What is my junk car worth in Milwaukee?
Most land between $150 and $700. Weight sets the baseline, so a full-size truck, van or body-on-frame SUV with a complete drivetrain sits high and a stripped four-cylinder sedan sits low. Milwaukee salt exposure pulls the parts value down on older vehicles, because corroded suspension and brake components cannot be resold. Call 1-800-935-8652 with the year, make, model and an honest list of what is missing and you will get a real number rather than a range.
Do my license plates go with the car?
No. In Wisconsin plates belong to the owner, not the vehicle. WisDOT tells you never to leave plates on an auto or light truck of 8,000 pounds or under when selling or junking it. Wis. Stat. 342.15(4)(c) goes further and says that if the vehicle has been junked, the transferor removes and destroys the plates. Keep them and transfer them to another vehicle you own, or cut them up. Do not mail them back to DMV.
The car is in the alley behind my house. Can you still get it?
Usually, and this is routine work in Milwaukee given how much of the city is alley-loaded. What matters is the approach. Tell us whether the alley is paved, whether a dumpster, a parked car or a garbage cart will be in the way, and whether the vehicle rolls and steers. A car that rolls can be winched out to a wider point. One frozen in place with no wheels needs more room and more notice, so say so on the first call.
Can you take a vehicle that still has a loan on it?
Not until the lien is cleared. Wis. Stat. 218.23(1r) bars a licensed salvage dealer from acquiring a vehicle for wrecking when the title names a holder of a security interest, unless the dealer pays that obligation in full. There is a second wrinkle: Wisconsin has sent titles to lienholders since July 30, 2012, so if your title was issued after that date with a loan listed, you cannot even apply for a replacement until the loan is paid. Get the lien release first.
