What Is Your New York Junk Car Worth?

Most junk cars in New York sell for $150 to $850. Complete vehicles in fair condition often bring $500 to $1,500 or more. New York’s harsh winters speed up rust and corrosion, which drops values for older vehicles, especially those stored outdoors Upstate. But the state’s large population creates strong demand for used parts, particularly for popular models like Honda Civics, Toyota Camrys, and Ford F-150s. Vehicles with working catalytic converters, transmissions, and engines bring higher prices. Location matters too. Metro areas like NYC and Buffalo typically offer better quotes because more buyers compete for inventory.

Scrap steel prices set the baseline value for any junk vehicle. When steel markets rise, so do offers for end-of-life cars. Scrap metal prices currently shift based on domestic demand and international trade conditions. New York has many licensed scrap processors competing for inventory, which helps support pricing. The live tracker below shows current scrap rates so you can see what your car’s raw materials are worth before factoring in parts value.

New York Junk Car Laws and Title Requirements

Title Transfer Process in New York

New York requires sellers to sign the back of the Certificate of Title and fill out the odometer disclosure statement on the title itself. The New York DMV oversees all vehicle transfers. You must give the buyer a properly signed title showing the sale date and purchase price. For vehicles eight years old or newer, federal law requires accurate odometer readings. Sellers should also complete Form MV-912 (Vehicle Bill of Sale) as backup documentation, though the signed title is the main legal transfer document.

Selling a Junk Car Without a Title

New York does not have an age exemption that allows title-free sales of older vehicles. All vehicle sales technically require a title. But registered junk car buyers and licensed dismantlers may accept vehicles with other documentation. A valid registration in your name, a transferable registration (Form MV-82), or proof of ownership such as a bill of sale from your purchase may work for some buyers. Scrap processors must verify ownership through their own records. Contact us to discuss your situation if you don’t have a title.

Getting a Duplicate Title in New York

To replace a lost title, submit Form MV-902 (Application for Duplicate Title) to any New York DMV office. The fee is $20 for a standard duplicate title. You’ll need valid ID and must be the registered owner. Processing typically takes two to three weeks by mail or can be done same-day at a DMV office if all documentation is in order. If the vehicle has a lien, you’ll need a lien release from the lender before the DMV will issue a duplicate.

Abandoned Vehicle Laws

Under New York Vehicle and Traffic Law, a vehicle left on public property for more than 96 hours may be considered abandoned. On private property, landowners must follow specific steps before removing vehicles. New York City has stricter rules with 72-hour limits in many zones. Property owners must notify local police and give the registered owner time to claim the vehicle. Removing an abandoned vehicle improperly can result in fines. If you have an abandoned car on your property, we can help coordinate removal with proper documentation.

Additional New York Requirements

New York requires sellers to remove license plates before transferring a vehicle. Plates belong to the owner, not the vehicle, and can be transferred to another car or surrendered to the DMV. You should also call your insurance company to cancel coverage as of the sale date. New York does not require emissions testing for junk vehicles being sold for scrap or dismantling. Sellers must report the sale to the DMV using Form MV-50 or the online reporting system to protect themselves from future liability.
