What Is Your Minnesota Junk Car Worth?

Most junk cars in Minnesota sell for $150 to $750. Complete vehicles in better shape can reach $1,500 or more. Minnesota’s harsh winters speed up rust and corrosion, which hurts body panel value but doesn’t necessarily affect mechanical parts. Vehicles with working engines, transmissions, and catalytic converters bring higher prices. Make and model matter too—domestic trucks and SUVs typically pay more than compact sedans. Location matters less than condition, though Twin Cities vehicles often have more buyer competition.

Scrap steel prices set the floor for any junk car’s value. When steel markets run strong, even completely dead vehicles have solid baseline worth. Minnesota has a well-developed recycling network, with processors throughout the state handling end-of-life vehicles. Check the live scrap price tracker below to see current market rates.

Minnesota Junk Car Laws and Title Requirements

Title Transfer Process in Minnesota

Minnesota requires sellers to sign the back of the Certificate of Title to transfer ownership. Fill out the seller section with your signature, printed name, date, and odometer reading. The Minnesota Driver and Vehicle Services (DVS) oversees all title transactions. You must also complete the Notice of Sale section on the title or submit a separate Notice of Sale form to DVS within 10 days. This protects you from future liability.

Selling a Junk Car Without a Title

Minnesota law allows vehicles 10 years old or older to be sold to licensed scrap metal processors without a title. You’ll need a valid photo ID and must sign an affidavit of ownership. For newer vehicles without titles, you’ll need a duplicate before selling. Some buyers may accept a registration card and photo ID for older vehicles, but proper documentation makes the transaction smoother.

Getting a Duplicate Minnesota Title

Apply for a duplicate title through Minnesota DVS by completing the Application for Duplicate Title form. You can apply online through the DVS website, by mail, or in person at a deputy registrar office. The fee is $11. Mail processing takes 2-4 weeks, or you may get a printed title immediately at some deputy registrar locations. All owners on the original title must sign the application.

Minnesota Abandoned Vehicle Laws

Under Minnesota Statute 168B, a vehicle counts as abandoned if left on public property for more than 48 hours or on private property without owner consent for more than four hours. Municipalities must tag abandoned vehicles and wait a minimum impound period before disposal. Minneapolis and St. Paul have active abandoned vehicle programs with fines starting at $150. Property owners can request removal through local police departments.

Minnesota-Specific Requirements

Minnesota requires odometer disclosure on the title for vehicles less than 10 years old. Remove your license plates before the vehicle is towed—Minnesota plates stay with the owner, not the vehicle. There’s no state inspection requirement for selling a junk car. If your vehicle has a salvage title, you must disclose this to the buyer. Keep copies of all signed documents for your records.

Frequently Asked Questions — Selling a Junk Car in Minnesota

Do I need a title to sell my junk car in Minnesota?

A title makes the sale easier, but Minnesota allows vehicles 10 years or older to be sold to licensed scrap processors without one. You’ll need valid photo ID and must sign an affidavit of ownership. For newer vehicles, we recommend getting a duplicate title from DVS for $11. We can walk you through the paperwork requirements based on your vehicle’s age and situation.

How fast can you pick up my junk car in Minnesota?

We offer same-day pickup throughout the Twin Cities metro when you call before noon. Next-day pickup is available statewide, including Greater Minnesota locations like Duluth, Rochester, and Moorhead. Rural areas may occasionally need an extra day to coordinate, but we reach every corner of the state. Most customers have their vehicle picked up within 24 to 48 hours of accepting an offer.
